Naomi Osaka and Daniil Medvedev have withdrawn from next week’s tournaments with injury and fatigue respectively.
Starting with Osaka, the three-time Grand Slam champion has withdrawn from the Japan Open after she suffered an injury against Coco Gauff in Beijing.
The WTA 1000 event in China was Osaka’s first tournament since her second round defeat at the US Open to Karolina Muchova.
It was also the first event since her partnership with Patrick Mouratoglou and despite her new-found aggressive tennis, Osaka was unable to sustain her level throughout the tournament.
Now Osaka is aiming to finish the season strong as her next scheduled event is in Hong Kong the week after.
As for Medvedev, the world number five has withdrawn from next week’s ATP 500 event in Vienna as he is starting to feel the effects of a long season.
Two comfortable losses to Jannik Sinner in Shanghai as well as the Six Kings Slam event in Saudi Arabia showed that Medvedev is tired and is physically limited heading into the final stretch of the season.
In a statement Medvedev said the following, “I have a lot of positive memories of the tournament. So it’s a shame that I can’t compete, but I’ll definitely be playing in Vienna again next year,” Medvedev was quoted as saying by tennis infinity.
The official reason for the withdrawal was a shoulder injury and Medvedev will aim to recover ahead of the Masters 1000 event in Paris before ending the season at the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin.
