Matteo Berrettini is aiming for an Australian Open seeding as he reflected on a nightmare 2023 season for the Italian.
The former Wimbledon champion had a year last year full of injuries and illnesses as he was unable to make his mark on the tour.
However this year has been much different with Berrettini outside the world’s top 40 and looking to make more progress ahead of the 2025 season.
Speaking in Shanghai Berrettini reflected on the last 12 months and admitted he would love to be seeded for January’s Australian Open, “Last year was very tough, one of the worst years of my career and my life as well,” Berrettini was quoted by tennisuptodate.com as saying.
“When you can’t do your job and what you love to do, then it’s always a battle. That’s why I’m appreciating every moment I have to spend on the court, perform, and give my best. I know it’s a process. I’ve done a great job this year to reclaim my place in the ranking and I feel good, so I hope to have a great end to the season.
“It would be good to be among the top 32 at the end of the year and be a seed in Australia. That’s one of the goals we set, but at the same time for me the most important thing is to be healthy and able to play, that’s the most important thing.”
Berrettini will hope to maintain his healthiness as he looks to end the season strong and will face Holger Rune in the second round of Shanghai on Saturday.
As for the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the 2025 season begins on the 12th of January.
