Carlos Alcaraz overcame Danil Medvedev 7-5 6-3 to reach the final at the China Open in Beijing. Medvedev improved to 6-2 in his eight head-to-head series against Medvedev. Alcaraz converted 5 of his 11 break points he earned.
Alcaraz hit 25 winners to just 14 unforced errors and broke Medvedev’s serve five times. Alcaraz went up a break twice in the fifth and seventh games, but Medvedev broke straight back both times. Alcaraz broke for the third time in the 11th time and served out the first set at 15.
Medvedev broke serve in the fifth game of the second set to take a 3-2 lead, as Medvedev was hampered by a upper leg issue. Medvedev was broken again in the eighth game, while he was serving to stay in the match, as Alcaraz converted his fourth match point to seal the win in 1 hour and 28 minutes.
“I am really happy that I did not lose my focus too long in the first set. I recovered it as soon as I got broken, and I am really happy that at the end of the set and I was able to play really good tennis in the return game and then serving at 6-5. I did a really good game. After that, once you are one set up, It’s a little bit easier, playing against Danil with more confidence”, said Alcaraz.
