Rafael Nadal has admitted he is in ‘no position’ to commit to further tournaments after withdrawing from the Laver Cup.
Despite signing up for the event in Berlin, Nadal has withdrawn from the Laver Cup creating further doubts over his future career.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion has only played seven tournaments this season and was expected to retire at the end of this season but has hinted that he could play on next season.
However Nadal has recently commented on his future and has refused to commit to any future tournaments, “Mentally I’m good, no problems,” Nadal was quoted by tennisuptodate as saying.
“I’m at home, enjoying other things, training as much as I can every day. No drama, obviously these are decisions [the Laver Cup withdrawal] that are being made, and this was a possibility – it’s been a while without competing. There will be someone else who can do better.
“Right now I’m not in a position to put myself down for anything. I said [I would play] until the Olympics and then we would see, and I’m in that period of rest.”
Nadal’s last tournament was at the Olympics where he lost to Novak Djokovic in the third round while he also reached the quarter-finals in the doubles alongside Carlos Alcaraz.
The aim for Nadal will be to potentially be involved in some capacity for the Davis Cup quarter-finals in Malaga later this year.
