Naomi Osaka has decided to end her five year partnership with Wim Fissette after a disappointing US Open campaign.
The former world number one has enjoyed some incredible performances and results since making her return to tennis.
In her latest breakthrough win Osaka defeated Jelena Ostapenko in the opening round of the US Open.
However Osaka’s run in New York went no further as in the second round she lost to eventual semi-finalist Karolina Muchova in straight sets.
Although there has been room for encouragement, ultimately the results have not met Osaka’s high standards as she has now decided to part ways with coach Wim Fissette.
Speaking on Instagram, Fissette hailed Osaka as a ‘great champion’ as the Belgian will move on to other ventures, “I first started coaching Naomi in 2019, and it was truly a pleasure. More so to be part of the comeback journey, seeing her grow as a person, athlete and now mother. A champion in many ways,” Fissette stated.
“We started from zero and developed week by week. In 15 years on tour, this was one of my best years working together with amazing people. From every defeat, we worked harder and better and grew a lot. We were very close to a breakthrough. When you do the right things and keep hearing from peers you are in the right direction, it’s tough not quite getting it yet. As the coach, you keep trusting the process, knowing the lessons are getting you closer to the trophies.
“After the US Open, Naomi decided to move forward with a new path. I accepted it knowing we close this second run with more good memories and gratitude for building her way back. Always wishing the very best for each other and families.”
Although the announcement has been announced today it’s been one in the making over the last couple of weeks as Osaka hasn’t hesitated in replacing Wissette.
That’s because Osaka has seemingly hired controversial coach Patrick Mouratoglou as her new coach.
The Frenchman has worked with Serena Williams, Holger Rune and Simona Halep in the past with mixed results.
The pair have been seen together in Los Angeles as Osaka prepares to return to the court at the China Open which starts on the 26th of September.
