Number 5 seed Magdalena Frech claimed her first singles title at the WTA 500 tournament in Guadalajara with a 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 win over world number 152 player Olivia Gadecki, who had never reached a WTA singles quarter final before this week.
Both players went on serve in the first set. There were no break points between 2-1 and the tie-break. Frech earned the first set point to take a 6-5 when Gadecki sent a service return wide. Frech closed out the tie-break when Gadecki misfired a a forehand.
Gadecki earned the first break in the opening game of the second set. Frech broke back in the fourth game to draw level to 2.2. before earning a second break in the eighth game to take a 5-3 lead with a passing winner. Frech missed out on a match point. Gadecki pulled back on serve at 5-4. Frech earned three championhips points and sealed the win with a passing shot.
Frech reached the fourth round at the Australian Open, her first WTA Tour final in Prague on clay last July and her first hard-court quarter last month. The Polish player is projected to make her top 40 debut.
“Australian Open fourth round, the final in Prague, and the title here, it’s the most amazing year of my career for sure. I am super proud about my achievements this year”, said Frech.
