Karolina Muchova and Jessica Pegula are into the US Open quarter-finals with straight sets wins over Jasmine Paolini and Diana Schnaider.

Starting with Muchova, the Czech Republican is into a second straight US Open quarter-final with a 6-3 6-3 victory over fifth seed Jasmine Paolini.

It was a masterclass in variety and creativity from Muchova who recovered from 3-1 down in the first set to stop Paolini’s bid for a third consecutive Grand Slam final.

The result means Muchova is yet to drop a set at this year’s US Open and will enter the latter stages of the tournament with confidence on her side.

Speaking after the match Muchova talked about her endless wrist injuries since reaching the semi-finals at last year’s US Open and what it means to be in the last eight, “This was my worst and most serious injury I would say but I love the sport,” Muchova was quoted by the BBC Sport website as saying in her on-court interview.

“In my head I was like, I would do everything I could to make it better and try and here I am today. I’m really grateful to all the people that helped me and yeah, I’m just a really happy kid now.

“I have to say that I was a little bit nervous from the start so I was trying to get my shots to feel the ball. Jasmine Paolini is an incredible player. I’m just really happy it’s worked again for me here.”

Muchova will now face Caroline Wozniacki or Beatriz Haddad Maia for a place in a second consecutive US Open semi-final.

The other winner on Monday so far is Jessica Pegula as the American’s Grand Slam dream continued with a 6-4 6-2 win over Diana Schnaider.

Pegula had to overcome a fierce opening set in which she had to face eight break point opportunities.

However the sixth seed held her nerve to reach her second US Open quarter-final and will now face either world number one Iga Swiatek or Liudmila Samsonova.
