Karolina Pliskova hopes to be back on the Tour as soon as possible after undergoing surgery to treat an injury problem.
The two-time Grand Slam finalist has had surgery on her left ankle after withdrawing from her second round match at the US Open. Pliskova took to the court to play Jasmine Paolini but was struggling with her movement and called it quits after only playing three points. After playing the second point, she stepped awkwardly on her left foot while trying to change directions.
“Happy to share that I successfully underwent surgery on the tendons in my left ankle,” the Czech wrote in an Instagram post.
“I’ll do everything I can to get back on the tennis courts as soon as possible, but health always comes first. A huge thank you to the medical team for their excellent care and to all of you for your support.”
Since reaching the final of a WTA 250 event in Nottingham in June, Pliskova has failed to record back-to-back wins at six consecutive tournaments. It has been a roller-coaster year for the former world No.1 who won her 17th WTA title in February at the Cluj Napoca Open in Romania before reaching the semi-finals of a WTA 1000 event in Doha. However, in the Grand Slams she has only won one match this season.
It is unclear as to when Pliskova is aiming to return to action. She is currently ranked 44th in the world and is in danger of ending the year outside the world’s top 50 for the first time since 2013.
At the age of 32, Plisova is the oldest Czech player currently ranked in the top 300 on the WTA Tour. She has earned more than $25M in prize money so far in her career.
