Emma Navarro stunned defending champion Coco Gauff 6-3 4-6 6-3 to reach the US Open quarter-finals.
Just like at Wimbledon, Navarro defeated Gauff as she progressed to the last eight at the US Open.
The world number three came back from a set and a break down to force a deciding set but a ton of double faults costed the defending champion.
Now the 13th seed will face Paula Badosa in the last eight on Tuesday.
There was a statement of intent from Navarro right from the beginning of the match as in the second game she created four break points.
The 13th seed frustrated Gauff with her defensive skills as she soaked up the pressure from the defending champion.
However the third seed recovered well to produce some big first serves as she held for 1-1.
Gauff tried everything in order to disrupt the variety and defensive skills of Navarro but the 13th seed continued to redirect everything deeper and more powerfully.
A persistent and consistent amount of returning pressure paid off for Navarro after saving break point in the third game, Navarro converted her fifth break point of the set to take a 4-2 lead.
The 13th seed threatened the double break as she looked to take the forehand early and rush Gauff’s baseline game.
The defending champion did well in order to dictate the tempo of the match as she saved set point to force Navarro to serve for the set.
Navarro wasted no time in serving out the set and continue to neutralize Gauff’s power in the second set.
It was a dissection of Gauff’s power as Navarro deflected any usage of angles and made Gauff work for every point.
Another masterclass in early ball-striking saw Navarro break for a 4-3 lead as the defending champion was on the ropes.
Having only created one break point in the entire match, Gauff needed to find something to desperately keep her title defence alive and with help from Navarro that’s what Gauff did.
A double fault from Navarro gave the break back to Gauff and the defending champion didn’t stop there.
It was now Gauff’s turn to force errors from her opponent as she problem solved her way back into this contest.
Another break in the tenth game secured the second set as Arthur Ashe Stadium erupted with this match going to a deciding set.
The momentum was with Gauff and the defending champion used it to her advantage as she put pressure on Navarro.
However Navarro remained unfazed as she survived the wave of pressure to hold for 1-1 and played a stress-free return game in the following game.
All of the sudden Gauff’s service jitters were back and despite saving some break points, a double fault handed Navarro the crucial break for a 2-1 lead.
Desperation started to set in for Gauff as the double faults continued to pour down on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
However Navarro kept level headed and continued to cruise through service games even if she wasn’t playing her best tennis.
Another break of serve in the ninth game completed a big win for Emma Navarro as she moved into the quarter-finals.
As for Gauff it was disappointment as her title defence came to a crushing end.
Navarro will now play Paula Badosa for a spot in the semi-finals.
