Novak Djokovic expects to face more challenges than usual during the early rounds of this year’s US Open despite coming through his opening match in straight sets on Monday.

The world No.2 started his campaign at Flushing Meadows with a 6-2, 6-2, 6-4, win over Moldova’s Radu Albot. Registering a 78th career win on the Arthur Ashe showcourt which is a new record for the Grand Slam. Overall, Djokovic has won 89 matches at the US Open which is level with Roger Federer. The only male player to have won more matches than him is Jimmy Connors (98).

However, it was a far-from-perfect performance from the Serbian who was playing for the first time since winning gold at the Paris Olympics. He produced 10 double faults and 40 unforced errors against Albot. On top of that, Djokovic only managed to put 47% of his first serves into play.

“I think it was a solid start. I struggled with my serve and the rhythm on certain shots. Overall from the back of the court, I thought I played pretty well.” He said of his performance.
“It’s always challenging to start, particularly when you haven’t played on this surface for five, six months and coming off an Olympic gold and playing on clay. I haven’t had any official matches before the US Open. So I’m expecting to be probably challenged a little bit more in the opening rounds.
“Hopefully I can play better each day. The good thing about Slams is you have a day between matches where you can train, you can work on things, and perfect your game. That’s what I need. That’s what I feel like I need.”

Djokovic will be hoping for a better performance on Wednesday when he takes on compatriot Laslo Djere in the second round. It is the second year in a row the two have faced each other in New York. In 2023 they clashed in the third round when the 24-time major champion was taken to five sets.

On paper, Djokovic is the clear favorite without a doubt. However, he is not taking anything for granted.

“It’s great for Serbian tennis that two Serbian players are facing each other. It’s a guaranteed third round for one of the Serbian guys.” He said.
“Hopefully it’s going to be me, but Djere is a guy that likes playing on a big stage.
“I think he also loves the conditions here. It’s a bit quicker. The ball stays low. He has a very flat backhand particularlyand very good serve, great return. He’s physically as fit as anybody.”

The 37-year-old is bidding to become the first player – male or female – to win a 25th Grand Slam title. He has already won the US Open four times, including last year when he defeated Daniil Medvedev in the final.
