Jessica Pegula has criticised the pre-US Open scheduling of WTA tournaments ahead of the Cincinnati final.
The American isn’t the only one to be left fuming at the WTA’s schedule as Iga Swiatek criticised the pre-US Open schedule earlier in the week.
The Olympics has left the tour’s schedule hampered as both finals in Canada and Cincinnati have been played on a Monday with little input from the players.
Speaking ahead of the final in Cincinnati Pegula admitted that the schedule is gruelling and it makes for a less fun tour, “I’m not crazy about two-week tournaments,” Pegula was quoted by tennisuptodate as saying ahead of next year’s extended Cincinnati tournament.
“Of course, when the weather is bad and the playing time is compressed it’s terrible and you wish you had more time. Other times you’re like, ‘Why is it two weeks?
“It can go either way, I don’t know which is better. I think we’ll continue to see tournaments grow and offer more money. But two long tournaments in a row and then the US Open is not ideal.”
Next year both Canada and Cincinnati will be a ten day event, further extending the tour for the players.
Pegula will hope the exhausting schedule won’t effect her title ambitions in Cincinnati as she aims for back-to-back WTA titles when she takes on Aryna Sabalenka.
