Jannik Sinner has admitted he is relieved to be avoiding the trend of upsets at the US Open as he reached the last 16 with a 6-1 6-4 6-2 win over Christopher O’Connell.

The world number one crushed the Australian in straight sets in a match that lasted just under two hours.

It was a dominant performance from Sinner as he broke on five occasions with O’Connell not having one break point.

The result will come as a relief to Sinner given the recent defeats of Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic in recent days as Sinner is into the second week in New York.

Speaking after the match Sinner referenced the events of the last couple of days and is looking forward to the rest of the tournament, “Everything can happen in this sport, so I try to stay on my side of the net and I’m trying to take [the tournament] day by day,” Sinner was quoted by the ATP website as saying in his on court interview.

“Each opponent is a very tough challenge and [I am] also enjoying every moment on the court. There have been already a couple of upsets, so let’s see what’s coming.

“But I’m very happy to still be here and hopefully I can play as many matches as possible. But as I said, we go day by day and then we’ll see how it goes.”

Sinner will now play either Gabriel Diallo or Tommy Paul in the last 16 with the Italian potentially facing Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals.
