World number one Iga Swiatek saved three set points on her way to beating lucky loser Kamilla Rakhimova 6-4 7-6(6).
The former champion was able to prevail in what was a tricky second set for the Pole.
It was a blistering start from Swiatek as the Olympic bronze medallist took a double break lead at 3-0.
However Rakhimova slowly grew into the match playing fearless tennis as she narrowed the deficit to one break.
Swiatek remained composed and methodical in her approach as she was able to just about close out a 41 minute set.
In the second set Swiatek was able to save break point before breaking for a 2-1 lead and was seemingly cruising into the second round.
Once again though Rakhimova stopped the world number one in her tracks as she broke back comfortably in the tenth game and forced a second set tiebreak.
The lucky loser took her opportunity to shine on Arthur Ashe Stadium and created three set points for a 6-3 lead.
Swiatek remained clutch though as she sealed five points in a row and moved into the second round.
Next for Swiatek is qualifier Ena Shibahara on Thursday.
There were also wins for Katie Boulter and Karolina Muchova on day two while Shuai Zhang’s losing streak extended to 23 matches with defeat to Ashlyn Krueger.
Collins plays final singles Grand Slam match
The big talking point so far though is Danielle Collins playing her final Grand Slam singles match.
A three set defeat to Caroline Dolehide in the opening round means Collins will not be playing a major part in any more Grand Slam shocks.
There was due to be an on-court ceremony to celebrate Collins’ career but with doubles to come Collins said that she didn’t want a special farewell, “Yeah, I’m still in the doubles, and I had requested not to have any presentation on the court,” Collins said in her press conference.
“I’m not somebody that, like, likes to celebrate my accomplishments. I’ve struggled with feeling guilt, you know, around success, and that’s something I have had to work on. So I’m not great, honestly, at having, like, an all-about-me moment.
“I just, yeah, would prefer to do something like that maybe in private, you know. But I feel like I’ve gotten enough attention to last a lifetime.”
Collins will now play alongside Caroline Garcia in the women’s doubles.
