World number 1 player Jannik Sinner battled past Fabian Maroszan 6-4 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 to reach the quarter finals at the Terra Wortmann in Halle.
Sinner earned an early break to take a 2-1 lead in the first set, but Maroszan broke straight back at 30 to draw level to 2-2. Both players went on serve until the ninth game when Sinner broke for the second time to seal the first set 6-4.
The second set went on serve. Sinner earned two break points at 5-5 40-15, but Maroszan saved them. The set was decided by the tie-break. Maroszan earned four set points at 6-2 with three mini-breaks. Sinner pulled back one of the three mini-breaks, but Maroszan sealed the tie-break 7-4 with his fourth mini-break, when Sinner hit a smash into the net
Sinner lunged for a diving forehand before jumping back to his feet to hit a winning crosscourt backhand on the first point of the second game of the third set. Sinner converted his fourth break point in the sixth game to open up a 5-1 lead. Maroszan pulled one break back to love in the seventh game for 2-5 as Sinner was serving to stay in the match. The Hungarian player saved two match points in the eighth game, but Sinner served out the win with a hold at love in the 10th game.
Sinner will the face a quarter final against the winner of the match between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Jan Lennard Struff.
“For sure I need to think about changing it up a little more, I may need to be more aggressive. I will need to talk my team about that. He returned very well, especially in the beginning”, said Sinner.
