Sebastian Korda and Jordan Thompson beat Uruguay’s Ariel Behar and Checz Republic’s Adrian Pavlasek 6-3 7-6 (9-7) in 77 minutes inside Manolo Santana Stadium in their first week playing together on the doubles court.
Korda and Thompson saved all six break points they faced. They earned a break in the fourth game en route to winning the first set 6-3.
Korda and Thompson fought back from 1-4 down in the tie-break of the second set. Behar and Pavlasek were not able to convert their only set point at 7-6.
Thompson and Korda dropped a beat ten opponents ranked inside the world’s top 40 throughout their title-winning run, including Matthew Ebden and Rohan Bopanna in the opening round.
Korda and Thompson dropped just one set across five matches en route to the title. The US and Australian team is using a spot reserved for singles players as part of a new format being trialled in Madrid.
The men’s doubles trophy in Madrid has been won by two singles specialists for the second consecutive edition, after Andrey Rublev and Karen Khachanov lifted the trophy in 2023.
“We practiced a tonne, and this was our tournament together. It was a pretty good one and we will play next week again in Rome next week. It was a lot of fun playing with Jordan next week and looking forward to next week”, said Korda.
