Fifth seed Andrey Rublev beat Andy Murray 7-6 (7-3) 6-1 in a high-quality third round match at Indian Wells.
Murray missed four set points on Rublev’s serve when he was leading 5-4 in the first set before Rublev earned two mini-breaks on the fifth and eighth points to power his way through to a 7-3 win in the tie-break. Rublev hit 29 winners in 13 games.
Murray was broken from 40-0 up in the fourth game of the second set. Rublev earned his second break in the sixth game and served out the win on his fourth match point. Rublev set up a third round match against Jiri Lehecka, who beat Brandon Nakashima 3-6 6-3 6-4.
“Murray had a lot of chances in the first set and I was lucky to win. Had I lost it, it would have been really tough. After the first set I felt more confidence and I knew it would be even tougher for Andy to keep up his consistency”, said Rublev.
