World number 13 Grigor Dimitrov edged out Alexander Schevchenko 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 6-4 to advance to the semifinals at the ABN AMRO Open at the Rotterdam Ahoy.
Both players went on serve with no breaks of serve en route to the tie-break. Dimitrov earned two mini-breaks on the third and seventh points to win the tie-break 7-2.
Schevchenko earned a break in the second game of the second set and held on serve to open up a 3-0 lead. The Kazakh player saved five set points to hold serve in the ninth game.
The third set went on serve until the 10th game when Dimitrov broke serve on his first match point.
Earlier at this tournament Dimitrov beat Lorenzo Sonego 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 and Marton Fucsovics 6-3 7-5. This year Dimitrov won the ATP 250 title in Brisbane and lost to Ugo Humbert in the final of the Open 13 in Marseille. Schevchenko reached the quarter final at this tournament after beating Zhizhen Zhang 4-6 6-4 6-3 and Holger Rune 6-4 1-6 6-3 in the previous rounds of the Rotterdam tournament.
