On Wednesday the world of tennis was stunned by the sudden death of one of the sport’s most well-known journalists.
Daily Mail reporter Mike Dickson was a prominent figure on the Tour and had worked in the journalism industry for decades. He received the Ron Bookman Award which is an honour issued by the ATP to those who has made a significant contribution to tennis. He also wrote the book ‘Emma Raducanu – when tennis came home.’
His death occurred whilst he was at the Australian Open covering the latest developments going on at the Grand Slam. On January 16th he posted on social media ‘Many happy returns to Grand Slam action for Emma Raducanu, who beats Shelby Rogers 6-3 6-2 with minimum of fuss. As solid as she needed to be. Now plays Yafang Wang of China. 4 Brit wins out of 4 in Melbourne today.‘ Just hours after that post, he collapsed and died at the age of 59 just days before he would have celebrated his 60th birthday.
Ubitennis is profoundly saddened by this loss. Our founder Ubaldo Scanagatta says Dickson ‘was not only a great writer but a man with an unselfish support towards his colleagues.’ A rare quality for a person who worked in an industry know at times for its egocentric approach. The two had known each other for a long time. Scanagatta says he will always remember the support that Dickson provided to him during his career and remains forever grateful for it.
Ubitennis sends our condolences to Mike’s wife Lucy, his three children and his entire family at this extremely sad time.
