Jannik Sinner has been selected as the Most Improved Player of the Year. Sinner has claimed his second ATP Award in 2021 after he won the Fans’ Favourite Award earlier this week.
Sinner won four ATP Tour titles in Montpellier, Toronto (the first Masters 1000 trophy of his career) and two ATP 500 in Beijing and Vienna beating Danil Medvedev in both finals. He also reached the final in Miami and two Masters 1000 semifinals in Indian Wells, Monte-Carlo and advanced to his first Grand Slam semifinal at Wimbledon. Sinner reached the quarter finals at all four Grand Slam tournaments in his young career.
Sinner tied Adriano Panatta as the highest ranked Italian player in ATP Ranking history. The Italian star set an Open Era record for most wins by an Italian player in a single season with a record of 64 wins to 15 defeats. Sinner earned a personal best of 13 top 10 wins in 2023, including two wins against Novak Novak Djokovic and two wins against Carlos Alcaraz. He had claimed nine top 10 wins across the previous three seasons.
Sinner beat Djokovic at the ATP Finals in Turin in a third set tie-break to clinch his fifth top 5 in a row. One week later Sinner saved three match points in the third set to beat Novak Djokovic in the Davis Cup semifinal. Sinner became the fourth player to beat Djokovic from match points down and the first one to do so with three in a row. Sinner teamed up with Lorenzo Sonego for the decisive doubles match, defeating Djokovic and Miomir Kecmanovic to clinch the tie and help Italy reach the Davis Cup final for the first time since 1998.
Jannik Sinner: “I think, especially in the second half of the season, mentally I was much stronger. I was not complaining so much on court when things were going in the wrong way. I think these kind of things, they make difference sometimes. One of the things where I can be really happy is that I played many important matches in the biggest stadiums we have throughout the whole year. This is something that hopefully can help for the next season”.
Sinner’s coaches Darren Cahill and Simone Vagnozzi won the Coach of the Year Award. Matteo Arnaldi, Christopher Eubanks and Ben Shelton were also nominated for the Most Improved Player of the Year in the 2023 Award.
