Hubert Hurkacz cruised past Roberto Bautista Agut 6-3 6-2 to reach the third round at the Paris Rolex Masters. Hurkacz fired 19 aces, becoming the seventh player in history to hit 1000 aces or more in a single ATP Tour season.
Hurkacz has won 14 of his past 15 matches at Masters 1000 tournaments. The Pole won the second Masters 1000 title of his career in Shanghai last month. He advanced to the semifinal in Paris Bercy in 2021.
He is just the seventh man this century to reach the 1000 mark and the first to achieve this feat since 2019. With his 19 aces he brought his total to 1004. John Isner surpassed the 1000 aces mark eight times in his career.
Hurkacz will face Francisco Cerundolo, who beat Casper Ruud 7-5 6-4. Ruud earned an early break in the opening game to take a 2-0 lead. Cerundolo converted his third break-back point to draw level to 3-3. Cerundolo saved a break point in the 10th game before converting his second break point in the 11th game to seal the first set 7-5. Cerundolo broke serve in the seventh game and served out the second set 6-4 on his first match point.
Stefanos Tsitsipas edged past two-time Swiss Indoors champion Felix Auger Aliassime 6-3 7-6 (7-4) in 1 hour and 48 minutes to advance to the third round.
Tsitsipas fended off six of seven break points he faced to improve his head-to-head record against Auger Aliassime to 6-3.
Tsitsipas saved two break points in the first game to hold serve before breaking serve in the fourth game to open up a 4-1 lead. The Greek player sealed the first set point after saving a break point in the ninth game.
Auger Aliassime earned an early break in the second game of the second set to open up a 3-0 lead. Tsitsipas saved three set points on return to hold serve after four deuces in the eighth game for 3-5.
Tsitsipas broke back in the ninth game and held serve to 15 to draw level to 5-5 by winning his third consecutive game.
Botic Van de Zandschulp edged past Tommy Paul 6-4 3-6 6-2. Van de Zandschulp earned his first break in the 10th game to win the first set 6-4. Paul earned two breaks in the first and fifth games to open up a 4-1 and saved four break points to hold serve after seven deuces. The US player served out on his first set point in the ninth game.
Van de Zandschulp converted his second break point in the sixth game to take a 4-2 lead. The Dutchman served out the second set 6-2 on his second match point in the 10th game.
With this result Paul will no longer have the chance to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin.
Van de Zandschulp came through the qualifying round and dropped just one set across four matches this week. Van de Zandschulp will face Andrey Rublev in the third round.
