Ugo Humbert edged Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4 3-6 7-5 to reach the Round of 16 at an ATP Masters 1000 tournament for the third time in his career.
Humbert broke serve in the first game and fended off four break points to serve out the first set. Tsitsipas earned a single break in the fourth game to win the second set 6-3.
Humbert opened up a 3-0 lead in the third set with a break in the second game. Tsitsipas broke back in the seventh game to draw level to 4-4. Humbert won a deuce game to take a 5-4 lead. The Frenchman earned a match point with a backhand pass before forcing an error from Tsitsipas with a defensive backhand to earn the decisive break in the final game.
Humbert has clinched his second top 10 win in ten days. The Frenchman beat Andrey Rublev in Beijing before losing to Danil Medvedev in the quarter finals. He has improved to 9-9 against top 10 players in his career, including a 2-4 record this season.
Humbert set up a fourth round match against JJ Wolf, who came back from one set down to beat Matteo Arnaldi 2-6 6-3 7-6 (7-4).
Arnaldi saved two break points in the fifth game of the first set. Arnaldi broke twice in the sixth and eighth games and saved a break-back point in the eighth game. The Italian player did not convert his six break points in the sixth game. Wolf converted his sixth break point in the seventh game to take a 4-3 lead. The US player broke for the second time in the ninth game to close out the second set 6-3.
Arnaldi started the first game of the third set to take a 1-0 lead. Wolf broke back in the fourth game to draw level to 2-2. Arnaldi saved a match point in the 10th game and three more chances in the 12th game from 0-40 down. Both players traded mini-breaks on the seventh and eighth to draw level to 4-4. Wolf won three consecutive points to win the tie-break 7-4.
