Former champion Daniil Medvedev is looking for a record-breaking number of wins in Shanghai after reaching the third round in China.
The 2019 champion is through to the last 16 after a comfortable 6-3 6-3 win over Cristian Garin.
Medvedev broke on five occasions as he sealed a 60th win on the tour this season, joining Carlos Alcaraz on 60 wins or more for the year.
However the US Open finalist has a personal milestone in his sights as he looks to pass his personal record of 63 wins this week in Shanghai, “I hope so, you never know,” Medvedev told the ATP website about potentially breaking the record that he set in 2021.
“At this moment and with the form I’m in, I would confidently say I will do it, but never say things too early in tennis. I’m going to try my best, I’m going to try to play more good matches in the tournament that I have left this season. It’s a good result so far, so I want to try to do better.”
Medvedev will look to continue his quest for more wins on Monday when he takes on Sebastian Korda with the former world number one looking to avenge his Australian Open defeat to the American.
Another big winner in Shanghai was Stefanos Tsitsipas who defeated Rinky Hijikata 6-4 6-2 to reach the last 16.
Tsitsipas has only won four matches since winning the title in Los Cabos in August but the Greek is looking towards building momentum ahead of the last part of the season, “It always helps having some good results in the background, especially when you come back to tournaments like this, big events at the best stage that tennis can offer,” Tsitsipas admitted.
“I’ve had a few encounters playing here with different kinds of players… I’m constantly building, and I hope to continue on this journey.”
Tsitsipas will now play either Ugo Humbert or Botic Van De Zandschulp next which is a number of matches to have been suspended due to rain.
Other winners on Saturday include Jannik Sinner, Tommy Paul and Nicolas Jarry.
