The British Davis Cup team faces the prospect of taking on world No.1 Novak Djokovic after being drawn against Serbia in the knockout stages on Tuesday.
Leon Smith’s team is one of eight who have qualified for the finals which will be held in Malaga between November 21-26. Britain secured their place in the finals following a dramatic 2-1 win over France on Sunday when the doubles team prevailed in three tightly contested sets. They also beat Switzerland and Australia in the Group stage that took place in Glasgow last week.
Meanwhile, Serbia secured their place by finishing second in their group behind the Czech Republic. The team beat South Korea and Spain but lost to the Czechs.
It will be only the third time in the Open Era that the two countries have clashed in the Davis Cup but it will be the first time they have faced each other on neutral territory. They are currently tied at 1-1 with Serbia winning in 2006 and Britain getting their revenge a decade later.
Britain is seeking to win the tournament for the first time since 2015 and then 11th overall. Only Australia (28) and the USA (32) have won the event more since its birth in 1900.
Should Team GB beat Serbia, they will play either seven-time winners Italy or the Netherlands in the semi-finals.
In the other section of the draw, underdogs Finland will begin their quest against Canada. The Nordic nation produced stunning wins over America and Croatia to reach this stage of the event for the first time. Meanwhile, the Czech Republic will face Australia.
Tickets for the Davis Cup Finals are already on sale. However, organizers say the schedule of the event ‘will be published in the coming weeks’ without giving a firm date.
