Jannik Sinner beat Alex De Minaur 6-4 6-1 in 1 hour and 29 minutes at the National Bank Open in Toronto to clinch his first Masters 1000 title after finishing runner-up in two editions of the Miami Open in 2021 and 2023.
Sinner has become the second Italian player in history to win a Masters 1000 title following Fabio Fognini’s triumph in Monte-Carlo in 2019.
Sinner converted five of the ten break points. The Italian player held at 15 in the first game before breaking at 15 to take a 2-0 lead. De Minaur broke back in the third game and held at 30to draw level to 2-2. De Minaur wasted a game point at 2-3 before Sinner broke serve with a lob winner. De Minaur pulled the break back for the second time.
De Minaur saved two break points to hold serve for 4-4. Sinner held at 15 in the ninth game. The Italian player earned three set points on return in the 10th game and earned the break to seal the first set 6-4 with a deep backhand in 53 minutes.
De Minaur held serve from 30-0 down in the second game of the second set. Sinner broke in the fourth game to open up a 3-1 lead, as De Minaur netted a backhand.
Sinner held serve at 30 to consolidate the break for 4-1. Sinner earned his second break in the sixth game and earned two match points with a service winner. He sealed the second second set after De Minaur made a forehand error.
Sinner has become the youngest champion at the Canadian Masters 1000 since then 20-year-old Alexander Zverev won this tournament in 2017.
Sinner has improved his Masters 1000 record to 18-4 in 2023. He also became the second first-time Masters 1000 winner of the season following Andrey Rublev, who won in Monte-Carlo last April.
