Felix Auger-Aliassime feels ‘mentally stable’ as he prepares for the second half of the season.
It hasn’t been the best season for the Canadian so far which has been reflected in first round exits at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
Auger-Aliassime has mentally and physically been unable to cope with what was a demanding schedule in 2022 as he currently sits at 39th in the Race To Turin rankings having picked up only 715 points.
Reflecting on the season so far Auger-Aliassime has admitted that this hasn’t been the best season for him but is hoping he can turn his form around, “It’s obvious that this hasn’t been the season that I would have hoped for so far,” Auger-Aliassime told sportsnet.
“Luckily for me, it’s not over. In the end I’m OK mentally. I’m positive about it all. I’ve had time to be home and train and try to get better with the knee and kind of look at, you know, where it’s coming from and also resolve that problem in order for the future.
“If I can bring that physicality back on the court, I know that the results will start coming a little by little or maybe even quicker because I know myself more and more through the years.”
Auger-Aliassime will be hoping to be fully fit having suffered a knee injury during the clay court season.
One aspect the Canadian spoke about was the mental side of things as psychologically tennis is one of the most demanding sports in the world.
However the world number 12 said that after a big break, he is mentally ready to compete for the biggest titles the sport has to offer, “Mentally, of course, there’s ups and downs,” Auger-Aliassime admitted.
“We don’t feel as confident every week. But I feel stable mentally, I feel in a good place. I’m very focused and driven and I feel that I’m confident in my ability. I know I’ll be ready mentally to play, you know, big matches and to play for important titles.”
One of the tournaments leading up to the US Open is the Rogers Cup in Toronto which is one of the biggest tournaments in the world for a Canadian.
Auger-Aliassime spoke about the opportunity that awaits him in Toronto, “It’s always an important tournament outside, of course, the Grand Slams,” Auger-Aliassime acknowledged.
“But it’s always an important one. As a player, it’s always nice to win in front of a home crowd. It’s nice to win in Canada for me, so hopefully this is one tournament that I can win in my career.”
Before Auger-Aliassime can concentrate on his home tournament in Toronto, the Canadian will participate in the ATP 500 event in Washington D.C. which starts on the 31st July.
