Felix Auger-Aliassime faces a race against time to be ready for Wimbledon after withdrawing from the Halle Open on Sunday.
The world No.11 confirmed in a social media post that he had hoped to be fit for the ATP 500 event but this is not the case. Aliassime hasn’t provided any details concerning the status of the issues he is currently dealing with. He was scheduled to play Dominic Thiem in the first round.
“I’m very sorry to announce that I have to withdraw from the tournament in Halle this year,” he wrote on Instagram. “I came here thinking I would be ready to compete which unfortunately did not end up being the case. I’ve had great moments playing here in the last few years and I’m looking forward to coming back healthier next year. For now I will focus and try to do everything possible to be match fit for Wimbledon. Thank you all for your continued support and I will be sure to keep you guys updated for the future. “
Auger-Aliassime hasn’t played on the Tour since his first round loss to Fabio Fognini at the French Open. After that match, the Canadian revealed that he was suffering from sickness the night before. He also said his shoulder didn’t feel great but that was not the cause of his loss to Fognini. In Paris, he was taking painkillers for his shoulder.
Since reaching the quarter-finals of Indian Wells in March, Auger-Aliassime has failed to win back-to-back matches at four tournaments. On top of that, in Lyon, he withdrew from his second match due to his shoulder.
The hope now is that the 22-year-old will be able to get back on track at Wimbledon next month. He reached the last eight of the Grand Slam in 2021 but last year suffered a shock first round loss to Maxine Creesy.
This year’s Wimbledon Championships will begin on July 3rd.
