Felix Auger Aliassime is into the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open after beating Francisco Cerundolo 7-5, 6-4 in two hours and 10 minutes.
The number eight seed served six aces and won 76% of his first-serve points in a match where he hit 42 unforced errors and struggled with his serve to close it out.
The Montreal native got off to a quick start earning three breakpoints in the first game of the match and managed to get the early break but at 3-2, the Argentine broke back to level the set.
At 6-5 the Canadian found himself at double set point at 15-40 and managed with a superb forehand winner to steal the first set 7-5.
Once again Auger Aliassime was the first to break serve taking an early 3-1 lead and turned that break into a double break and at 5-2 served for the match.
That’s when the number eight seed got into a mental lapse and the number 27 seed managed to win three games in a row before the Canadian could finally serve it out on his fourth match point.
Auger Aliassime will now face the American Tommy Paul who managed to upset the Pole Hubert Hurkacz in three sets 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in one hour and 56 minutes on Stadium 2.
