Veronika Kudemertova, Barbora Krejcikova and Paula Badosa reach the second round at Adelaide International 2

Number 6 seed Veronika Kudemertova rallied from a set down to beat Victoria Azarenka 2-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 reaching the second round at the Adelaide International 2.

Kudemertova was broken three times in the opening set, but she did not face a break point in the second and third sets. 

The second set went on serve until the 11th game. Azarenka saved two break points at 5-6 on serve to force the set to the tie-break.

Azarenka went up a 3-0 lead in the tie-break, but Kudemertova won six consecutive points. Azarenka saved two set points at 3-6, but Kudemertova won the tie-break 7-4.

Both players went on serve until the ninth game of the third set, when Kudemertova broke for the second time in the match to take a 5-4 lead. The world number 9 player closed out the match at 15 after 2 hours and 58 minutes.  

Barbora Krejcikova beat 2022 finalist Alison Riske Amritraj 6-2 7-6 (7-3) Krejcikova set up a match against number 5 seed Daria Kasatkina.  

Krejcikova won the last four games from 2-2 with two breaks of serve to seal the first set 6-2. 

Riske Amritraj saved four break points in the second set and a match point at 6-2 5-4. Krejcikova went down a mini-break in the tie-break, but she recovered by winning five consecutive points to seal the second set. 

Riske Amritraj lost to Anna Kalinskaya in the final qualifying round, but she earned a spot in the main draw a lucky loser after the multiple withdrawal of Madison Keys and other players. Keys beat Riske 6-1 6-2 in last year’s final of the Adelaide International tournament. 

Former Indian Wells champion Paula Badosa beat Anett Kontaveit 6-4 6-3 in the first round. Badosa earned her first break in the third game to take a 2-1 lead and won her next service games to close out the first set 6-4. Kontaveit converted her second break point in the fourth game to draw level to 2-2. Badosa won four consecutive games from 2-3 down with two breaks of serve to seal the second set 6-4 setting up a second round match against another Estonian player Kaia Kanepi. Badosa won 77% of her first serve points and 76% of her second serve points. 

Lucky loser Amanda Anisimova beat Ludmila Samsonova 7-5 6-3 to advance to the second round. 

Samsonova earned two breaks to open up a 4-1 lead in the first set, but never reached a set point. Anisimova won six of the next seven games wincluding three breaks of serve to close out the second set 6-3. Anisimova will take on Beatriz Haddad Maia in the second round.

Zheng Qinwen came back from a set and a break down to beat US lucky loser Shelby Rogers 4-6 6-4 6-0 after 2 hours and 24 minutes in their first head-to-head match in 2 hours and 24 minutes. Zheng went down 4-6 1-2, but she came back by winning the last eighth games. Zheng set up a second round match against two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, who beat Elena Rybakova in a match between Wimbledon champions on Monday.
