The Canadian began her Australian Open campaign by beating the number 25 seed Marie Bouzkova in straight sets.
Bianca Andreescu booked her spot in the second round of the Australian Open after beating the Czech Marie Bouzkova in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 in one hour and 41 minutes.
The Toronto native hit 23 winners and won 15 out of 18 points at the net and her aggressive game plan paid off causing a major upset on day one of the tournament.
“I am very grateful for how I played,” Andreescu told TSN.
“And not playing last year was a bummer but I am very happy to be back this year and it is my favourite tournament.”
The first three games of the match went on serve and the Canadian got off to an aggressive start and at 2-1 had a chance to break, taking full advantage to take the early lead.
At 4-2, the Czech had a chance to break back to go back on serve but Andreescu was able to save it and hold serve, serving out the first set in 46 minutes on Court 3.
The second set stayed on serve until 3-3 when once again Bouzkova set up two more breakpoints with a powerful forehand winner but the Canadian was able to save both and hold serve.
The very next game it was the Toronto native chance to break but the number 25 seed was able to turn the tables and save it before holding another crucial service game.
At 5-4 with Bouzkova serving to stay in the match Andreescu started applying more pressure on her serve and earned two match points and won the match after forcing another error from her opponent.
After the match, Andreescu in a one-on-one with TSN spoke about how difficult it was to get the win against a very tough opponent.
“She is a tremendous fighter so I had to give my all right from the start and I am very happy that I did that because I know she can take control when her opponent isn’t taking control from the start so I did that and I did a good job throughout the match with my tactics.”
Andreescu will now face the Spanish qualifier Cristina Bucsa after she was able to beat another qualifier Eva Lys in three sets 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 in one hour and 46 minutes.
