Lorenzo Musetti will start his 2023 season at the inaugural edition of the United Cup in Australia on 29th January. Musetti arrived in Brisbane to adjust to the jet-leg on 24th December. During the off-season Musetti trained in Monte-Carlo with his coach Simone Tartarini.
Former world number 1 junior player Musetti beat Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the ATP 500 tournament in Hamburg at the age of 20 in the youngest ATP Tour final since 2005 final when Rafael Nadal beat Tomas Berdych. He achieved his career-high world number 23 after beating Matteo Berrettini to win the second ATP Tour title in Neaples last October.
He won the Supertennis Award for the best Italian player of the 2022 season.
“I ended a fantastic season. I achieved all the goals I set before the season. The results went beyond my expectations. I am the third best ranked Italian player. My goal is to do even better. I hope to become the top player. It would mean to achieve great results, as Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini are two top players and will return to the top 10. We are not rivals and have a great respect for each other. We are a great team when we play for the national team in the Davis Cup”, said Musetti in an interview to the Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Musetti lost to Felix Auger Aliassime in the semifinal of the Davis Cup and has still regrets that Italy was not able to reach the final.
“We have a very strong team. It would be nice to play with our best team. Some players like Berrettini and Sinner were injured. I was very tired during the Davis Cup finals after a long season. I will plan the next season more carefully and I will take some weeks off to take rest and prepare for the top tournaments. The Davis Cup and the ATP Finals are very important tournaments These goals motivate me. If I achieve this goal, I want to prepare these events in my best shape. The win in Hamburg was the turning point in my career. I realized that I could compete at the same level with the best players in the world. I will have few points to defend in the first half of the season and I will try to take advantage from this situation.”
