Dominic Thiem saves three match points to beat Hubert Hurkacz in Antwerp

Dominic Thiem came back from one set down to beat  Hubert Hurkacz 3-6 7-6 (11-9) 7-6 (7-4) reaching the semifinal at the European Open in Antwerp. 

Hurkacz broke in Thiem’s first service game and held serve to open up a 3-0 lead. The Pole held his next service games until 5-3 when he saved the first break point before winning the first set 6-3. 

Hurkacz earned an early mini-break in the second set. Thiem broke back to draw level to 4-4. Thiem fended off three match points in the tie-break of the second set, including one on a lucky net cord at 5-6. Thiem won the tie-break on his third set point with a forehand running volley winner to send the match to the third set. 

The third set went on serve in the first ten games. Each player saved the only break point they faced and went on serve until the tie-break. Thiem earned two mini-breaks to race out to a 4-1 lead. 

The Austrian player went up a 6-2 lead in the tie-break earning four match points after Hurkacz hit a forehand long. Hurkacz saved two match points to claw his way back to 4-6. Thiem sealed the win on his third match point with a forehand winner. Thiem hit 47 winners to 30 unforced errors. 

Thiem set up a semifinal against Sebastian Korda, who converted five of his six break points in his 6-0 6-2 win over Yoshihito Nishioka. 

Felix Auger Aliassime came back from one set down to beat Daniel Evans 4-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 in 2 hours and 40 minutes. 

Evans converted his only break point to close out the first set 6-4. The British player saved three break points in the second set to set up a tie-break. Auger Aliassime won all five points on his serve to win the tie-break 7-4. Evans broke twice in the third and seventh games to win the third set 6-2. 

Auger Aliassime set up a semifinal match against Richard Gasquet, who beat David Goffin 6-2 7-6 (8-6). Gasquet won 80% of his second and saved all six break points he faced. Gasquet advanced to his second semifinal in 2022 after Geneva amd his first on hard court since 2020.
