Bianca Andreescu is into the second round of the GDL Open in Guadalajara, Mexico after beating Jil Teichmann 6-2, 6-4 in one hour and 20 minutes.
The Toronto native hit 13 winners and won 61% of her first serve points in a match that went back and forth for both sets.
” I really like the atmosphere and I feel the altitude helps,” Andreescu said afterwards. “I wanted to come out and stay positive and give everything I have”.
The Canadian got off to a quick start by breaking in the first game of the match and managed to turn that break into a double break. That was enough for her to wrap up the first set.
Just like the opener, Andreescu broke in the opening service game of the second set and at 4-2 went up another break and served for the match but was broken in the process. The Toronto native served out the match at 5-4 to book herself a spot in the next round and was thrilled with the win.
” I am very happy with the consistency,” she said. “Sometimes I could have gone for more but chose to be safe and I didn’t want to go for too much. There is a good balance and I think my serve and my return and fighting till the end helped”.
Andreescu will pay two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in the next round. The Czech defeated Bernarda Pera 6-3, 7-5.
In other action, Marta Kostyuk beat Aliaksandra Sasnovich in straight sets 6-1, 6-3, and Rebecca Marino defeated America’s Ann Li 6-2, 7-6.
Lin Zhu needed three sets to beat Alize Cornet of France 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and 39 minutes, while Victoria Azarenka beat lucky loser Elina Avanesya 6-4, 6-2.
