Stan Wawrinka upsets Danil Medvedev to reach the quarter final in Metz

Stan Wawrinka upset.Danil Medvedev 6-4 6-7 (7-9) 6-3 to advance to the quarter final at the Moselle Open in Metz. 

Wawrinka has scored his first top 10 win since the 2020 Paris Rolex Masters against Andrey Rublev. 

Wawrinka dropped just four points on his serve and broke serve in the seventh game to take a 4-3 lead. 

Medvedev bounced back in the second set by breaking serve to open up a 2-0 lead, but Wawrinka broke straight back 

Wawrinka missed a match point at 6-5 to close out the match in the tie-break of the second set before Medvedev won four of the next five points to close out the first set 9-7. 

Wawrinka raced out to a 3-0 lead in the third set, but he wasted two break points in the fourth game. Medvedev broke back in the fifth game to draw level to 3-3. The Russian player saved a match point, when Wawrinka was serving for the match at 5-3. Wawrinka saved a break point before sealing the win on his third match point. 

Second seed Hubert Hurkacz beat Dominic Thiem 6-4 6-3 in 1 hour and 16 minutes. Hurkacz hit 12 aces and saved the two break points he faced. Thiem reached the ATP Challenger Tour final in Rennes and beat Richard Gasquet in the first round in Metz. Hurkacz converted his third break in the eighth game to seal the first set 6-4. The Polish player earned another break in the fifth game to seal the second set 6-3.  

Lorenzo Sonego beat Gilles Simon 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 after 2 hours and 9 minutes.

Sonego wasted a break point in the sixth game, but he did not face any break points in the next games en route to the tie-break. 

Sonego earned a double mini-break to win the tie-break 7-2. 

Sonego earned an early break in the first game of the second set, as Simon made a double fault. The Italian player wasted a double break point at 3-1. Two games later converted his third break point in the seventh game to take a 5-2 lead. Simon pulled one break back in the eighth game. Sonego held serve at 15 to close out the second set 6-4.
