Roger Federer has announced that he is to retire from tennis after this month’s Laver Cup.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion hasn’t been seen on the tour since his defeat to Hubert Hurkacz in last year’s Wimbledon quarter-finals.
Federer has been battling with knee injury and was planning to make his full tennis return in Basel in October.
However the 41 year-old, has now scrapped those plans and plans to play his final ATP event at the Laver Cup in London later this month.
Announcing the news on social media Federer released a voice message explaining his decision and thanking all the people that have made his career possible.
As well as winning 20 Grand Slam titles, Federer won six ATP year-end Championships and was world number one for a combined total of 310 weeks.
Having spent 20+ years at the top of tennis, Federer will be remembered as one of the greatest players of all time having inspired a generation of people to be involved in tennis.
