Bianca Andreescu is into the third round of the US Open after beating the number 15 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 in one hour and 28 minutes on Louis Armstrong Stadium.
The Canadian won 69% of her first serve in a match where she was in control from start to finish. Normally scheduled to hit the court around 8 pm, the players started their match close to 11 pm.
“I know she was doing well so I had to bring my A game and I liked how I started,” said Andreescu. “The second set was tight but I am happy I was able to hang in and win in two”.
The Toronto native got off to the best possible start breaking the Brazilian in the first game of the match and at 4-2 broke again to go up a double break before serving out the first set.
The second set stayed on serve until 3-3 when the Canadian sensed an opening and managed to get the crucial break which was enough to serve out the match.
After the match, she was asked about the late start and how she was able to get the win tonight.
” I honestly felt fresh till the end and my serve was a huge weapon tonight and I think I did really well on my return game,” she said.
Andreescu will now face Carolina Garica in the third round after the Frenchwomen was able to beat the Russian Anna Kalinskaya 6-3, 6-1 in 62 minutes.
It wasn’t all good for Canadians at Flushing Meadows as both Leylah Fernandez and Felix Auger Aliassime crashed out of the tournament. Fernandez lost to Liudmilla Samsonova 6-3, 7-6 and men’s sith seed Auger-Aliassime was ousted by the Brit Jack Draper 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.
