Felix Auger-Aliassime is into the second round of the US Open after beating the Swiss qualifier Alexander Ritschard 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in three hours and five minutes.

The Canadian served 13 aces and won 72% of his first serve points in a match that had ups and downs.

” It’s always better to win in straight sets but I am pleased with the win and I honestly feel like I belong here playing with the best tennis players in the world. I am thrilled to be here.” Auger Aliassime said afterwards.

The world No.8 got off to a great start by holding his opening service game and getting the early break of serve to take a 2-0 lead and that break was enough to wrap up the first set.

The second set stayed on serve until 3-3 when once again it was the Montreal native getting the crucial break of serve and he served out the second set with ease.

The third frame was where things got tricky for the number six seed. Failing to break the Swiss it was Ritschard’s turn to put pressure on the Canadian and he got the early break to take a 3-1 lead. That one break of serve was enough for the qualifier to serve out the third set and extend the match to a fourth set but that’s where the 22-year-old regained control.

At 2-1, the Auger-Aliassime earned three more breakpoints and broke to take a 3-1 lead and turned that break into a double break lead before serving out the match in style.

“I think I had a great start and it was up and down on my serve which I need to adjust and I hope I can play better.” He said.

Auger-Aliassime will face Britain’s Jack Draper in the second round.
