Bianca Andreescu won her opening match of the US Open by beating the Frenchwomen Harmony Tan 6-0, 3-6, 6-1, in one hour and 40 minutes on the Grandstand Court.
The Canadian hit 21 winners and won 66% of her first serve points in a match that went the distance.
“The conditions today weren’t easy and I was playing really well,” said the former champion. “In the second set she came back and changed her tactics and was playing more aggressive.”
The Toronto native got off to the fastest start breaking serve in the opening game of the match and turned that break into a double break at 4-0 with a superb backhand return winner. Andreescu clinched the opener in just 26 minutes.
The second set was when the Tan turned things around by breaking the Canadian in the opening game to take the early break and jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Andreescu managed to get one of the breaks back but it wasn’t enough as Tan served out the second set to force a deciding third set.
In the final set, the 2019 US Open champion turned up the heat again getting the early break to take a 2-0 lead, and at 4-1 broke again and served out the match.
In her post-match on-court interview she was asked how much she had enjoyed herself today on court.
“I wake up every morning wanting to play on stages like this and it’s my motivation to be here and continue to inspire others means a lot to me,” she said.
“I am so ready for my next match”.
Andreescu will face the winner of the match between the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia and Ana Konjuh.
