Jannik reaches his first semifinal of the 2022 season in Umag

Second seed Jannik Sinner overcame Roberto Carballes Baena 6-4 7-6 (7-5) in 1 hour and 18 minutes to reach his first semifinal of the 2022 season at the Playa Laguna Croatia Open in Umag. 

Sinner earned his first break in the third game and did not face any break points in the next games to close out the first set 6-4. 

Sinner wasted five break points in the third game of the second set before earning the break in the 11th game to take a 6-5 lead. Carballes Baena broke back to 30 to force the set to the tie-break. 

Sinner earned fourth match points at 6-2. Carballes Baena won three consecutive points to claw his way back to 5-6. Sinner held his nerve in the tie-break of the second serve, when he was not able to serve for the win, but he closed out the first set 7-5 on his fourth match point. 

The Italian player improved his win-loss record for this season to 33-9. 

Sinner has reached quarter finals in two Grand Slam tournaments at the Australian Open and Wimbledon and in three Masters 1000 events in Miami, Monte-Carlo and Rome.

“I am very happu, obviously. I have won many matches, but I think I have had some unfortunate moments this year, but here I am, the first semifinal of the year, and hopefully I can show some good tennis also in the next round”, said Sinner.  

Sinner set up a semifinal macth against Franco Agamennone, who cruised past Marco Cecchinato 6-2 6-1. 

Carlos Alcaraz  eased past cruised past Facundo Bagnis 6-0 6-4 to advance to his seventh semifinal of the season. Alcaraz will move into fourth place of th ATP Ranking ahead of Tsitsipas with a win over Giulio Zepieri in the Umag semifinal. 

Alcaraz won the first eight game to build up a 6-0 2-0 before Bagnis held his first service game. The Argentine player got to 30-30 in Alcaraz’s final three service games and held his only break point, as Alcaraz was serving for the match. Alcaraz maintained his early break point and and closed out the match at deuce in the 10thgame. 

Alcaraz improved his record to 26-3 on clay  this season. 

Alcaraz’ semifinal opponent Giulio Zeppieri, who beat Bernabe Zapaa Miralles 7-5 6-3. Zeppieri scored his first straight set win after four three-set victories. Including three from a set down.

“It’s not usual to play against left-handed players, but of course it’s preparation for the next round. It is going to be a really tough round. I have nightmares with Italian players, but I am trying to show my best and I will try to reach the final”, said Alcaraz.
