Ugo Humbert believes that his lull in form could be a side effect from having a COVID-19 vaccination but he has been unable to get a definite answer from doctors.

The 23-year-old has managed to win just two matches so far this season against eight losses on the Tour. Although one of those victories was against Daniil Medvedev at the ATP Cup. His latest defeat took place in Monte Carlo where he fell 6-4, 7-6(5), to Spain’s Pedro Martinez in the first round.

“It’s a very tough challenge. I had very tough moments. I played many, many matches not feeling well, and I feel I lack confidence,” Humbert told reporters on Tuesday.
“When I felt good there were some points I had no doubts about how to play them and now I start having those thoughts and hesitating, so it’s a very tough challenge.’
“I’m trying to find solutions day after day, and I will try not to think about what happened in the past and just be in the present moment.”

Trying to identify the root of why his form has declined in recent months, the Frenchman said he started to suffer from fatigue shortly after having a vaccination during the second part of 2021. Humbert also tested positive for COVID-19 shortly after playing Richard Gasquet in the first round of the Australian Open.

Asked directly if he believed that the vaccine was behind the problem he has experienced, the world No.48 says it is ‘difficult to say.’ Although he confirmed that a doctor told him it is a possibility but they have been unable to confirm this due to the vaccine being relatively new. Although it has been proven safe by numerous health regulators, including the World Health Organization.

“It’s very difficult to say. I’m absolutely not a doctor. I did all the possible tests, and we found nothing. It was crazy,” he said.
“The doctors said there might be a connection with the vaccine but it was useless to keep searching because we don’t exactly know enough about the vaccine yet.’
“But ten days after my shot in Toronto, of course I had played a lot, but after 45 minutes or one hour, I had cramps everywhere, and at the end of the season it was very tough for me to practice. After an hour I was exhausted. I had to stop for three weeks.”
“I also reacted again to COVID when I was in Australia. I think my body had not recuperated enough.” He added.

Last September veteran player Jeremy Chardy pulled the plug on his season after have a adverse reaction to a vaccination. According to L’Equipe, he said he felt violent pain’ all over his body. He is yet to return to the Tour. Meanwhile, Gael Monfils said he suffered a ‘small health glitch’ which might have been due to his third vaccination. Monfils states that he has no regrets about having the jab.

“I’m not the only athlete. I also heard others talking about it, and I know it can happen,” Humbert commented. “I was part of that situation but I really want to forget about all this. These were tough times. I prefer not to talk about it anymore.”

It is common for there to be possible side effects from any sort of vaccination. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) says their approved COVID-19 vaccinations have been evaluated by clinical trials and have met their safety standards. More than 857 million doses have been given to people in the EU and European Economic Area (EEA).

Earlier this year an ATP spokesperson confirmed that 99% of players in the top 100 have recieved at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccination.
