David Goffin came back from a set and a break down to beat Alex Molcan 3-6 6-3 6-3 in one hour and 58 minutes in the final of the Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakesh winning his sixth ATP Tour title.
Goffin avenged his defeat against Molcan, who won their most recent head-to-head match at the ATP 250 tournament in Melbourne last January.
Molcan went up a break in the second game to take a 2-0 lead. Goffin broke straight back in the third game for 1-2. Molcan earned his second break in the fourth game
Molcan served at 6-3 2-1 40-15 with a break in the first game in his second career final. Goffin broke back in the fourth game to draw level to 2-2, when Molcan missed a forehand drop shot.
Goffin went up a break in the fifth game to take a 4-1 lead, when Molcan missed a backhand drop shot in his next service game.
Goffin earned an early break in the first game of the third set to open up a 2-0 lead. The Belgian player saved a break point at 4-3 when Molcan missed a backhand into the net. Goffin avoided facing another break point by hitting a forehand winner and closed out the decider 6-3 with a second break in the ninth game.
“I am very happy and proud of my week. It was not easy. I played a lot of tough matches. At the end I won my sixth title, here in Marrakesh. It gives me a lot of happiness and confidence for the clay season”, said Goffin.
