Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has reached his maiden masters 1000 final with a three set victory over Grigor Dimitrov.
The Spaniard admitted it was ‘a dream come true,’ after beating Grigor Dimitrov 6-4 6-7(2) 6-3 to reach his first ever masters 1000 final.
Davidovich Fokina blew a 5-3 lead in the second set as Dimitrov fought back to one set all.
However the Spaniard came back from a break down at 2-1 to turn the tide and reach his maiden masters 1000 final.
This has capped off a dream week for Davidovich Fokina who has beaten Novak Djokovic, David Goffin and Taylor Fritz to get to this stage.
After the match the 22 year-old embraced the moment as he reaches his breakthrough moment, “I am so, so happy to be in the final. It is a dream come true,” the Spaniard admitted to the ATP website.
“When I was a kid I was dreaming about this day. It is a dream and I am so happy. The second set I had my chances, but I didn’t play very well. I was so tight and he just put the ball in. The tie-break was also tight. But I went to the bathroom and said that I want this win.
“He started the second set well and had the chances to break me again for 3-0. But that hold gave me power to keep pushing. Now I am in the final I will enjoy it and try my best.”
Davidovich Fokina now has his sets on the biggest title of his career which would see him climb into the top 20 in the world.
As it stands the Spaniard will at worst climb up to number 27 in the live rankings should he lose Sunday’s final.
Davidovich Fokina now awaits the winner of the other semi-final between defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev.
