Francisco Cerundolo reached the semifinals after Jannik Sinner was forced to withdraw from the match after 23 minutes due to foot blisters, as the Argentine player was leading 4-1.
Cerundolo came into the Miami Open with a 0-2 tour-level record on hard courts, but he beat Tallon Griekspoor, Reilly Opelka, Gael Monfils and Frances Tiafoe.
“I did not know anything. When I was serving at 3-1 30-0, 30-0, I saw him bending down, It was really strange. I did not anything wrong and I hope he is ok, he is a great player. It means a lot to advance. It is everything I have dreamed of”, said Cerundolo.
Cerundolo will face either Casper Ruud or Alexander Zverev in the semifinal. Sinner beat Emil Ruusuvuori, Pablo Carreno Busta and Nick Kyrgios to reach his ATP Tour quarter final of the year. He also advanced to the last eight at the Australian Open and Dubai.
