Alexander Zverev has apologised for his actions towards an umpire at the Mexican Open after the German was withdrawn from the singles draw in Acapulco.
The incident happened in a doubles match as Zverev teamed up with Marcelo Melo to take on Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara.
A controversial line-call came about with Zverev and Melo thinking the ball was out when it was called in.
There was no challenge system so the call stood which set up three match points for Glasspool/Heliovaara which they converted on the next point with an ace.
After that Zverev proceeded to smack his racket on the umpire’s chair repeatedly which one of his attempts almost hit the umpire on the foot.
This resulted in Zverev being withdrawn from the singles and has now taken to Instagram to apologise for the incident:
It will now be interesting to see whether any further punishment is handed out to Zverev or whether he will be able to continue to play.
The German’s next tournament is scheduled to be on the 10th of March at Indian Wells where he receives a first round BYE.
Also competing at Indian Wells will be the likes of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
