20-time grand slam champion Rafael Nadal is into his first final for eight months after defeating Emil Ruusuvuori 6-4 7-5.

The Spaniard reached the final of the Melbourne Summer Set despite showing rusty form throughout the tournament.

Today’s semi-final was only his second competitive match since last August after Tallon Griekspoor withdrew from their quarter-final match.

Despite the lack of match practice Nadal stayed solid and methodical on serve after saving two break points in the opening game.

In the tenth game Nadal took his only break point opportunity of the set to take the opening set 6-4.

There was a more attacking second set from both players and eventually Ruusuvuori earned his reward for an aggressive match as he broke to take a 5-3 lead.

However the world number 95 couldn’t control his nerves and mentality as Nadal broke straight back.

The Spaniard completed a run of four games in a row to seal victory and a place in Sunday’s final.

Speaking to thewest.com.au, Nadal said patience is required if he is to return to his best in time for the Australian Open, “It’s important to come back after five, six months outside the competition, it means a lot,” Nadal said.

“Of course, I need to do things better on court, but it’s step by step. I need to play with the best attitude possible, even if the tennis isn’t perfect. I know how to do it, it’s about being patient.”

This week comes as a boost for Nadal as he looks to get match-fit ahead of the Australian Open. As Novak Djokovic’s participation looks in doubt, Nadal could lead the grand slam winners standings come the 30th of January.

Although Nadal will face tough competition from the likes of Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Nadal will look to win the title in Melbourne when he faces American Maxime Cressy who served and volleyed his way to a 7-5 7-6(9) victory over Grigor Dimitrov.

The final is set to take place at midnight UK time.
