Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos beat Olympic champions Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic 6-4 7-6 (7-4) in 1 hour and 41 minutes to improve to 2-0 in Green Group at the Nitto ATP Finals at the Pala Alpitour in Turin.
Granollers and Zeballos wll reach the semifinals if Ivan Dodig and Filp Polasek beat Kevin Krawietz and Horia Tecau.
The Spanish and Argentine team earned their first break point in the third game to take a 2-0 lead after two double faults from Mektic and did not face any break points to win 6-3 win the first set after 36 minutes.
The second set went on serve until Granollers saved a deciding Deuce point at 4-4. Pavic fended off three break points from 15-40 in the seventh game.
Zeballos saved two set points with big serves at 4-5 30-40 en route to the tie.break, where there earned four set points at 6-2 with two mini-breaks. Mektic and Pavic saved the first two set points, but Granollers closed out the tie-break on the third opportunity with a volley winner.
Granollers and Zeballos won two Masters 1000 titles in Madrid beating Maktic and Pavic and Cincinnati and reached two finals in Acapulco and Wimbledon, where they lost to Mekic and Pavic. Mektic and Pavic finished at year-end number 1 after winning nine titles as a team at the Olympic Games, Wimbledon, three Masters 1000 in Miami, Monte-Carlo, Rome, Antalya, Melbourne, Rotterdam and Eastbourne.
