Alexander Zverev told reporters he is ‘proud’ after beating Felix Auger-Aliassime to reach the Vienna semi-finals.
The Olympic champion edged out the Canadian 6-4 3-6 6-3 to reach the last four in Austria.
It was the 50th win of Zverev’s season and despite a valiant second set from Auger-Aliassime, the German broke in a long sixth game to claim victory.
Zverev has now won four of his five previous head-to-head meetings with the Canadian and his quest for a fifth title this year continues.
However after the match Zverev despite revealing his pride over the result admitted that more needs to be done to win matches more easily, “I did make it difficult for myself once again, that needs to stop happening,” the German told atptour.com.
“One easy mistake and the second set went away. But I am proud of myself because at the beginning of the second set it could have gone his way easily.”
Zverev will now meet talented Spaniard and US Open quarter-finalist Carlos Alcaraz who edged out Matteo Berrettini 6-1 6-7(2) 7-6(5).
The Spaniard edged out Wimbledon finalist to reach his first ATP 500 semi-final.
After the match Alcaraz admitted it was one of the best performances of his career so far, “This is one of my best performances on Tour so far,” the 18 year-old told atptour.com.
“I am really happy for that and it was amazing. I just tried to play aggressively all the time. In the tough moments it was important to be able to do that.”
Zverev currently leads the head-to-head with a solitary win in Acapulco in March.
