Stefanos Tsitsipas survived a first round scare, defeating Andy Murray 2-6 7-6(7) 3-6 6-3 6-4.

The world number three survived a gigantic scare from the three-time grand slam champion coming back from 2 sets to 1 down to beat the former world number one.

Murray was playing at his vintage best at times but it wasn’t enough to beat Tsitsipas who played his best tennis when he needed.

Tsitsipas will face Adrian Mannarino in the second round.

It was a perfect start from Murray who used his athleticism to keep extending the rallies against a nervy and tight Tsitsipas.

Some vintage Murray play saw him seal the early break into a 2-1 lead as he was setting the tempo and being aggressive to keep pushing Tsitsipas back onto the baseline.

As Tsitsipas’ errors grew, Murray’s level kept getting better and better as his backhands, lobs as well as overall play kept troubling Tsitsipas and the Brit’s confidence grew.

A double break lead saw Murray fired up as he was in total command of the opening set with Tsitsipas struggling to find a way past the Murray defences.

Murray successfully closed out the opening set as he took a one set lead with Tsitsipas having it all to do.

The second set was a much better level of play from Tsitsipas as he served much smarter and gained confidence in his groundstrokes.

Murray’s level had dipped but continued to have that same defensive solidity that was so crucial in controlling the opening set.

Towards the end of the second set both players became more aggressive on return and it was Murray who had the first opportunities to strike the crucial blow after having two break points in the ninth game.

However Tsitsipas held serve and immediately threatened the Murray serve but just like the rest of the match, no break points were created as the set headed towards the second set tiebreak.

The three-time grand slam champion pulled off some ridiculous points to have a 6-4 lead and two set points for a two set lead.

However the humidity had an effect on Murray’s movement and a couple of slips cost him big time.

Tsitsipas clawed himself back in the tiebreak as well as the match as he took the tiebreak 9-7 to level at one set all.

A frustrated Murray got some new shoes and was ready to respond in fashion in the third set as he cruised to a 3-0 lead.

An inconsistent Tsitsipas returned to his erratic tennis with Murray looking to be aggressive at every opportunity.

A massive hold in the fifth game which lasted 10 minutes was one of the keys to the former champion winning the third set as he took a 2 sets to 1 lead.

After a Tsitsipas medical time-out, it was the Greek’s turn to respond as he showed his best tennis of the match.

Free-flowing winners and more aggressive tennis saw him take advantage of a fatigued Murray as the third seed took a double break lead at 5-0.

Despite a mini-blip from Tsitsipas, the world number three remained composed as his effective serving saw him level the match at two sets all.

Tsitsipas continued his momentum into the fifth set with an early break while Murray was fuming about the Greek’s seven minute toilet break prior to the set.

The Brit continued to hang in there with the third seed having to win crucial points on serve to keep his break advantage.

Some well constructed points from Tsitsipas kept Murray at bay with the Brit still voicing his frustrations.

Despite Murray’s best efforts it wasn’t to be as Tsitsipas served out the five set win to book a second round meeting with Adrian Mannarino.
