Dominic Thiem has announced he will miss the rest of the season after re-injuring his wrist during training.
The Austrian was due to defend his US Open title in a couple of weeks time having hurt his wrist in Mallorca prior to Wimbledon.
Even though Thiem seemed to be on the road to recovery it seems things have taken a turn for the worse after another setback.
Announcing the news on his Twitter account Thiem explained that he has reinjured his wrist during training and will therefore miss the rest of the 2021 season.
The news means that not only will Thiem miss the rest of the season, therefore not being able to defend his US Open title, but the Austrian will also leave the world’s top 10.
Thiem’s best result of the season was reaching the semi-finals in Madrid in what has been a turbulent year for the Austrian.
Now the goal is to be fit in time for the Australian Open in January where he will look to replicate his final performance in 2019.
That means there will be a new champion in New York this year with the last grand slam of the season starting on 30th of August.
