The world number one faced some adversity but managed to beat her German opponent in straight sets.

Ash Barty is into another WTA 1000 final this time in Mason, Ohio at the Western and Southern Open beating the world number 22 Angelique Kerber in straight sets 6-2, 7-5 in one hour and 14 minutes.

The Aussie fired 29 winners and 12 aces while Kerber hit 21 unforced errors in the loss.

” I think I did a pretty good job on my service game so I was able to serve well and get some cheap points off my first serve and Angie (Kerber) is one hell of a returner and one of the best in the game so I wanted to try and take that away from her as best as I could today and I think being able to in the end in the second set grapple the momentum back to get back to 3-3 was a big point and overall it was a pretty good match.”

The first five games of the match went on serve and at 3-2, it was the world number one with the first breakpoint of the match setting it up beautifully with her forehand and got the early break.

With Kerber serving to stay in the set at 5-2 she struggled on serve and on Barty first set point she would wrap it up with a sensational passing shot at the 27-minute mark of the match.

Barty rode the momentum and managed to get another early break in the second set and the two players traded breaks of serve back and forth until the Aussie finally held serve to make it 4-3.

At 6-5 with the world number one sensing the finish line she earned two match points but only needed one as she took the win and booked her spot in Sunday’s final.

In that final she will face the Swiss Jill Teichmann who has been having an amazing week and today beat the number five seed Karolina Pliskova in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 and in her post match press conference she spoke about the opportunity of playing the world number one in the final.

“For me it’s perfect and it’s a nice challenge and playing on center court against the world number one in a final and I will go for it.”

This will be the first ever meeting between Ash Barty and Jill Teichmann as they have never played each other before.
