Andrey Rublev beat Fabio Fognini 7-6 (7-49 6-3 after 1 hour and 33 minutes to reach the third round at the Toronto ATP Masters 1000 tournament.
Rublev beat Fognini for the third consecutive time this year after winning their previous head-to-head matches at the ATP Cup and in Wimbledon.
Fognini broke serve in the sixth game to open up a 4-2 lead, but Rublev broke straight back at 15 in the seventh game. Rublev earned the decisive break on the ninth game to win the tie-break 7-4.
Fognini saved two break points in the second game of the second set. The Italian player missed a game point in the eighth gameat 3-4 40-30 and dropped his serve two points later to trail 3-5. Rublev sealed the win with a forehand winner on his second match point.
James Duckworth beat Jannik Sinner 6-3 6-4 after 1 hour and a quarter with a break in each set. Sinner claimed his biggest title just three days before at the ATP 500 tournament in Washington.
Duckworth rallied from 0-40 down on Sinner’s serve to break serve in the fourth game. Sinner earned two break points at 2-4 down, but Duckworth saved them and held his serve to close out the first set 6-3.
Sinner saved a break point in the first game of the second set after three deuces. Duckworth held on his serve and got the break in the seventh game at deuce. Sinner saved a break point in the ninth game to hold serve, but Duckworth served out the second set 6-4 at 30 in the 10th game. Dusan Lajovic upset Felix Auger Aliassime 7-5 6-4. Lloyd Harris cruised past Feliciano Lopez 6-2 6-3. Lopez replaced Rafael Nadal, who withdrew from the tournament due to a foot injury.
